Patiala was the capital of the erstwhile princely state of Patiala. Having magnificent forts, palaces and gardens, the city is said to have been founded in 1756 by Baba Ala Singh.

What to see
The Moti Bagh Palace, built in the 19th century, is patterned after the famous Shalimar Gardens of Lahore. It now houses the National Institute of Sports and the Art Gallery.

Punjab is known for handicrafts and handlooms, phulkari (traditional embroidery), lacquer wood-work, furniture, footwear, carpets, jewellery, woollens and blankets.
Patiala is known for jutties (shoes) and parandies (hair ornaments).
Cuisine
Famous for its rich cuisine and milk products, Punjab offers the food lover plenty of choice. Its traditional Makki-ki-Roti and Sarson-ka-Saag with chunks of home-made butter, accompanied by a glass of butter milk (lassi) is best known. Also popular are exotic pulaos, biryanis, vegetable pickles and kababs.

Punjab has its own colourful vibrant way of celebrating festivals. Basant Panchami (spring festival) is celebrated in January/February. Hola Mohalla is celebrated in March. Baisakhi is celebrated in April. Urs at Rauza of Mujadid Alif Saani Sheikh Ahmed Faruqui is celebrated in August at Sirhind. Bavan Davasti is celebrated in September. Dussehra, Diwali, and Guru Purb, the birthday of all Sikh Gurus, are celebrated in October/November. Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Gobind Singh is celebrated in November / December.
