What to see

Marina Beach

Chennai has the 2nd longest beach in the world. The best time to visit the beach is early morning or late evening

Elliot Beach

A continuation of Marina Beach, Elliot beach is smaller but much cleaner.

Fort St. George

Built in 1653 by the British East India Company, the fort was the British seat of power until Independence. It now houses the State Assembly and a museum which contains various artifacts dating back to the British and earlier eras.

San Thome Cathedral

Located near Marina Beach, this neo-Gothic style cathedral was originally built in the 13th Century in honor of the apostle of St. Thomas. It was rebuilt in 1896.

Kapaleeshwarar Temple

This ancient Shiva temple in Mylapore is built in typical Dravidian style architecture. It is located close to San Thome Cathedral.

Sri Parthasarathy Temple

One of the oldest surviving temples in the city, the Sri Parthasarathy Temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and was first built during the reign of the Pallava dynasty in the 8th century.

The Government Museum

The museum probably has the finest collection of Chola art in the country. It also has a fascinating collection from the Chalukya, Hoysala and Vijaynagar periods in South India. A must visit.
